Sippy Cups

The sippy cup collection started innocently. I got the first one when the boy started to eat his pureed vegetables. As I put the cup up to his mouth and he tasted water he looked at me like I was trying to poison him. After awhile he decided that water was great. He was playing with the cup and throwing it like a normal baby, but he didn't drink out of a cup by himself.

One friend said it wasn't a big deal, but to try one with a straw. He just chewed on it. Then we tried a toss and go cup. Though handy and cheap, it doesn't have handles. He just enjoys pushing it off of his tray. The cup with a flip top lid is his favorite because he likes to put food on top of it in the flip's crevice. I guess he is saving the food for later, but I'm not sure. He also greatly enjoys drinking out of my cup or water bottle, but let's face it. I don't like carrying a extremely wet baby around all the time.

Today as we were lounging in a friend's pool I turned the baby into the "swimming" position and walked around. He gulped the pool water frantically in a manner that suggested I was not giving the kid enough water. "Hum, this is probably normal," I thought to myself.

This evening the husband called me during the boy's bath so I could watch him gulp the bathwater down. The boy was taking a scooped-out toy, filling it with water, and drinking to his heart's content.

So, is it the sippy cup? Or is it just more fun to drink water when it is all around you?

My kid still does it. Does that make it normal? Not sure:).

I don't think he's drinking the bathwater because he's dehydrated. Seems to me if he was really thirsty, he'd figure out the cup and stick with it. And, while I don't particularly like the idea of drinking the bathwater that I'm sitting in, my guess is that's a really cool idea to a little kid.
