National Public Radio

NPR and I have had a rocky relationship. It all started with the parent's band carpool my freshmen year of high school. One father always had the radio on NPR. It was six in the morning and I was always really sleepy by the time I made it to early band practice. NPR wasn't helping with the overwhelming desire to nap. (Though not a big fan of constant talking in the morning I had to admit it was better than the car pooling chain smoker who couldn't stop smoking in the 10 minutes it took to get to school and would light up in the car. She rolled down the windows while it was raining to blow the smoke out the window getting all of us in the back seat wet, but I digress.)

The next stage of my journey with NPR was in college. My roommate would turn on Diane Rehms talk show after our swim class while I made fun of her voice. Then I learned of her voice difficulties and I guiltily stopped making fun and actually listened to her.

After college and PT school I had a long commute and the then boyfriend, now husband, and I would listen to NPR in the mornings. I'm not a morning person, but learning from my prior experience I embraced it. I allowed the melodious sounds of the news to drown me to sleep for a quick nap while in the car. Feeling slightly guilty about napping through national news we also listened to "Prairie Home Companion" on Saturday nights. He loves this show and I've grown to actually like it though I was a little annoyed by it at first.

When we moved back to my hometown in August we were both disappointed to hear that "Prairie Home Companion" was coming in October to do a live show and all the tickets had sold out within 8 hours. As luck would have it last Friday, the night before the show, the PAC opened up some more seats and the husband pounced on the tickets. I agreed that we could get them as the husband's Christmas Present.

Saturday night we went to see Garisson Keillor live. I also now find myself turning the radio on NPR to listen to the news. I guess I've gone a complete one eighty and it's official. I like NPR.

That's funny. I used to listen to Garisson Keillor with my Dad when I was little. I lOVED him.

Oh, and I think the kid is supposed to be 5 before they promote to the top bunk. Riley is 2 months away, but we thought she was capable enough.

How funny. I'm absolutely in love with NPR, but I HATE Prairie Home Companion. Isn't that sad? I could have watched it like a zillion times as they record in a studio just a few blocks away from the U of Minn. campus. I don't know why I don't like it, I just never could develop an appreciation for the man. Maybe I should try again.

We love NPR, too! Funny b/c I always made fun of Diann Rehm and like you felt awful when I found out why she sounds that way. LOVE, love, love "This American Life". We get the podcasts. "Weekend America" is another favorite. Can do without "Thistle and Shamrock" which is the Celtic music hour. Awful. Also like SPlendid Table sometimes although I make horrible fun of her as well.
