Daylight Savings: Friend or Foe?

I used to love falling back out of daylight savings time. A WHOLE extra hour of sleep. That is until I had a toddler. This past weekend, I had forgotten that we were to fall back and only when we put the child down at his regular bed time I realized what I had gotten myself into.

The boy woke up at his regular time, which now was an hour earlier. We went to church, but since he had eaten earlier he was a bit cranky. He is also dropping his morning nap and that makes him cranky around 10-11 regular time. At church he was cranky a whole hour early.

We had previously decided to meet family for lunch, which at this point we were regretting. He was so tired, hungry, and cranky that the husband and I took turns sitting out by the lobsters in the lobby so as to avoid the mean looks given to us by the surrounding tables. At this point I was incredibly cranky, hormonal, and was really irritated at the screaming boy. The husband finished, he streaked out into the lobby with the diaper bag, and we made a mad dash for home.

I changed while the husband got the boy changed and ready for a nap. I then went in with my comfy boxers and tee shirt on and rocked our frustrated, mad at the world little boy. He snuggled right up against me. As I rocked and sang to him he began to pat my arm sweetly with his chubby dimpled hand. All irritation washed away and I said, "I'm sorry baby boy for being so irritated." He then took a 3 hour nap as acceptance of my apology.

Maybe next year I'll be better prepared.
