The husband and I don't really make Valentine's day a huge celebration. The main reason is because it stresses me out. I don't want a huge thing of chocolates, the cats eat any flowers that come into the house, and I hate going out to dinner and waiting in line with a stressed-out waiter on the day that is "supposed" to be romantic and wonderful. I have a deep down gut feeling that Hallmark, the flower people, and the chocolate makers all got together to put guilt on the men to buy stuff to make the special someone in their life happy. I figure that the husband does such a good job of this year round that this one day really doesn't register in my book. So, we do little things on the day and then usually make dessert of some sort. This year we are ordering pizza. (Yay! I don't have to cook. What ever shall I order? Pepperoni? or shall I mix it up a bit and order Canadian bacon?)
We decided that we weren't going to make Valentine's day a huge deal while we were engaged. In fact, we were planning on laying low and cooking dessert that weekend together
(This is where the dessert tradition started. I highly recommend this tradition.) Except the then-finance didn't want me to be teased by my co-workers for not getting anything. I wasn't expecting anything, but after lunch I came back and there was a fire extinguisher on my desk at work with a little poem that read:
Roses are Red--
But I didn't get you that,
'Cause every time I think of you,
My heart goes pit-a-pat.
And if you perished in a house fire,
I don't know what I'd do;
So keep this present close at hand.
P.S. My heart burns for you.
It was so clever, and I really did need a fire extinguisher. That is one of the reasons I married him.
May your Valentine's be happy and full of love!

Fire extinguisher is hilarious! Very impressed w/ poem! We also do small things. I usually get him a creative sweet thing of some sort - one year it was 2 fat truffle mice from LaBaguette kissing on a plate of choc.covered strawberries. More little tokens of love and we NEVER go out to dinner that night - usually the next couple of nights. And always (except this year!) there is champagne!!
