Photo Monday: A Cake Experience

I have decided to make the baby's first birthday cake. Now, this statement might not seem like a big deal to one reading this blog, but several factors make that statement a very, very brave statement.

First, I hate cake. Always have. In fact, I can't stand frosting. I'll eat it to be polite, but I always scrape the icing off and usually don't finish the piece given to me. Second, I had a bad cake experience. After graduate school when I was living in my tiny efficiency apartment for a mere $275/ month (I had to throw that in) I decided to make my friend a cake for her birthday. Her Martha Stewart like sister-in-law was going to be out of town and we were going to eat dinner with them. The then finance was over while I was making the cake and decided to check it to see if it was done. When he jiggled it the middle of the cake collapsed. I was upset, but decided it was nothing a little icing couldn't take care of. Like many things in life, I was wrong. It was a horribly disfigured cake that my friend made me bring over (I tried to explain why she couldn't have her cake). I got her sister-in-law to teach me how to properly put icing on a cake, but to be honest I haven't really made one since our lesson. Until today.

Today I made a trial run of the boy's birthday cake. I know myself well enough to know that I will make some huge mistake, I will freak out when I do this, and I will end up in tears. I didn't want that to happen on the boy's birthday so I practiced.

Oh, I am glad that I did. A woman in my mom's group gave me this beautiful train cake pan because she didn't think her girls would want to use it. I was really excited about making a train cake, but I didn't read the directions as thoroughly as I should have. I had cake batter enough to fill up 2 pans and make 2 cakes, but tried to put it all in one round. Oops. Oh well. It was a trial run. The husband shaved the excess cake for me and a friend (who has all the cake decorating tools) taught me and helped me decorate my train cars tonight.

Here is the picture of the finished project. I am hoping that the real birthday cake turns out half as well and with more train cars.

I live by frosting, so next time we are at a party... sit by me!!! I would have never known you didn't like cake - these little charmers sure are super fabulous :)

It depends on the cake, whether I like it or not. I'm not a fan of the Costco sheet-cake variety.

Cute train cake, though! Very clever.

Can you believe our babies are turning one???!!!

Oh my gosh i was thinking the same thing - we'd make great partners since I prefer the frosting. in fact, my friends tease me that I don't know how to make a dessert without frosting - its true! Your cakes turned out so cute! You should be proud!

To City Mama: I still am having trouble believing that my little pumpkin is almost one year old! Are you doing anything fun for the boy's birthday?
To SS and Stac-
I am a great wedding partner because I'll give all my frosting away:)

Adorable little train cars. I'll take one, thanks! I've got the insatiable breastfeeding sweet tooth. It's so weird. I've never been a sweets person and now I can barely hold myself from eating a whole bag of Oreos.

Considering how well you bake cookies, I have to say I'm surprised you don't do cake. The train is quite an endeavor, then. Looks great!

I'm an AWFUL baker -- I can screw up the cookies from the Nestle pre-made roll. Cake is a nightmare for me, too. For #1's first birthday bash I did cupcakes, which was the perfect solution. Then it's not all or nothing, ya know?

#2 didn't really have a first birthday party. That's what happens when you're #2 -- and you can't eat the cake (due to allergies!) anyway! =P
